Viajeros del Mezcal

Educating the world about the craft of artisanal Mexican mezcal

We only work with local
artisanal
farmers
.

What we do

We are a volunteer project that supports local, artisanal mezcal farms in the Oaxacan area. Our aim is to support sustainable mezcal farming by offering our services to a select few artisanal farms that need our help.

We work to showcase the importance of artisanal mezcal agriculture, that is rich in tradition and continues to use hands on methods. We continue our fight against the industrialisation of mezcal farming as the pressure for demand increases.

Currently, we work with three mezcaleros, assisting them with manual labour and any work they may need. This can include planting, harvesting, weeding by hand or clearing fields to make way for agave planting. This work can be tough, so we try to leave early to miss the mid day heat!

Our Mission

To support local communities in Oaxaca

Whether we are offering manual labour services on farms or contributing to the local community, our mission is to support local, sustainable businesses and NGOs.

Both in Miahuatlán and other locations in Oaxaca, we aim to take part in school exchanges, further education programmes and general volunteer work in deprived communities.

Meet our founder

Jorge Urbieta

Hola! My name is Jorge, I'm from Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz in Mexico and founded Viajeros del Mezcal in 2022. As a former volunteer, I have travelled and worked through Serbia, Turkey and Germany, and so understand the sort of experiences you are looking for.

I welcome all volunteers as I have been welcomed, with a varied range of incredible projects and with the upmost respect. As a host, friend and colleague, I will teach you about my country, as well as further your understanding about agave and the processes involved in creating mezcal.

I invite you to come visit my country and work alongside me in Oaxaca to experience the real Mexico, learn more about our cultural heritage and of course, the very best artisanal Mezcal.

Guadalupe Ramos (Tio Lupe)

Guadalupe Ramos (Tio Lupe)  began producing mezcal at the age of 14, under the direction of his father. A decade later, he started making mezcal in his own distillery in Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz.

Audencio Ramos
Son of Tio Lupe, Audencio started his own distillery in 2019. Working during short distilling seasons, his production is more limited and he offers a range of aromatic, artisanal mezcals.

Victor Ramos

Victor's mezcal is frequently bottled under the Mezcaloteca/Mezcalosfera label Mal Bien, and Gusto Historico. His son, Emanuel Ramos and his wife Natalia Sanchez both also produce

incredible mezcal.
